When Jamie Jacobsen and Parker Moore began work on their brainchild, Tedious & Brief’s debut album, three years ago, the path forward wasn’t entirely clear. The world was in the middle of an identity crisis, their friends and family were navigating major life changes, and they themselves had transformed since their last release.
“As we were writing for this album, we noticed how easy it is to get caught up in our own melodrama,” Jamie says. “It can feel like we’re the only ones thinking, feeling, and struggling the way we do. But in the middle of that, we had this moment of clarity—realizing that everyone around us was going through the same thing. That’s where we happened upon the term ‘sonder’ — the realization that every person is living a life as vivid and complex as our own.”
What ensued from that enlightened moment was a project—appropriately-titled SONDER—that became a deeply-personal, yet ultimately universal, collection of reflections not only from their perspective but of those unfolding around them. SONDER officially released via artist services imprint AESTHETYK, along with distribution from The Orchard.
Jamie and Parker enlisted Aaron Marsh, founder of seminal indie-rock band Copeland, to produce the album. It was mixed by Hunter West (Little Image, The New Respects), with Zach Lardy playing a key role in additional production and editing.
“The album is even more than what we hoped it would be. Being on the other side of these recordings, we’re feeling more sure of ourselves creatively than we ever have,” The duo says. “Aaron, Zach and Hunter are each huge reasons why this album is as good as it is. They saw the vision and ran with it fully.
Pulling from an array of influences, SONDER departs from the band’s earlier nostalgic-leaning alt-pop approach into a more distinctive, darker sound reminiscent of Phantogram and Matt Maeson; even glimpses of Maggie Rogers and Paramore.
SONDER’s focus track, “Age,” started to take shape after a day of exploring bold, satirical songwriting styles, pulling inspiration from artists like Oliver Tree. “I found myself stepping into this character laced with irony and dark humor,” Jamie says. “The song was inspired by the constant stream of chaos in the news and the numbness that tends to come with it. I wanted to explore that feeling in a way that’s darkly funny—because sometimes humor is the only thing that helps us cope.”
